My Senses Poem

Raro Beach

I see the clean water looking blue,
I taste the water when it  in my mouth,
I hear the sea’s moan as it crashes on the shore,
I feel the fish go by grazing my skin,
I smell the sunscreen on my skin wash off

St Peters Concert

St Peters came to Good Shepherd and did a fantastic concert just for us! I noticed a lot of people who used to be here in our school. My personal favourite part was the we will rock you part.

My Halloween Poem

🎃Halloween🎃

I walk around the eerie path,
As i see the decorations of a bloodbath.
I  smell the  delightful aroma  of sweets,
And Very soon kids fill the streets.
House to house is how it goes,
Decorations i feel from head to toes.
I go to everybodies door,
See the lollies with Halloween decor.
I hear the kid screaming their head off,
Until one of them makes a horrible cough
I eat all my sweets not missing a crum,
Halloween was too much fun!

Pumanawa

On Monday we did pumanawa, I do preforming arts in room 6 and we were doing make-up design. We learnt about clown faced make-up, we were told to partner up so I chose to go with Miriam. We each got a plate of make-up, I was done first and so Miriam did my face first. I looked scary, but my pain was over and it was Miriam's turn! We ended up in the end both really scary!

Hockey

On Friday we had so much fun with Sport NZ as they came in to teach us hockey. We got to do warm up and drills with the hockey sticks and played against each other in teams. We are already looking forward to next Friday’s session.

Cook Island Language

Week 3 has been a very busy week with so many celebrations. Good Shepherd School celebrates our multicultural school with our Cook Island Language focus. We looked at the culture through our reading and made fun fact files. We were also lucky to have Alessandra and the cultural leaders teach us a Pure (prayer) to sing.

We learnt Aro’a mai te Atua iaku. See if you can say/sing this pure too.

Aro’a mai te Atua iaku.
Aro’a mai te Atua iaku
I te au mea taku kite nei
Te anuanua kua iti mai ki roto iaku
Aro’a mai te Atua iaku

My God loves me
My God loves me
And all the wonders I see
The rainbow shines through my window
My God loves me

Room 6's Assembly

Last week Room 6 performed their assembly. Our main entertainment was a drama circle on occupations. We also displayed our mixed media we made in term 2. Some people also shared about what they put on their art and why. We all had so much fun preparing and presenting our assembly.

Room Six Whole School Prayers

Room 6 hosted whole school prayers. Our theme was The Gift of Faith. We did a song called ‘Open the Eyes of My Heart’ and Jiwoo, Zara and Maggie made hand actions for us. There were also people who did the prayers of the faithful. Overall prayers was a big success and everyone enjoyed it.

How the Water Cycle Works

How the Water Cycle Works

I am learning to inform my audience through an explanation

By Seihara

Have you ever wondered when you were drinking a glass of water if a dinosaur may have stepped in it? I am guessing you probably did not realise that water is recycled and all the water that is on earth has always been here, therefore a dinosaur could have come into contact with the very glass of water you just drank. The water cycle is a continuous cycle that repeats a number of steps to complete the cycle. If you put water in a closed container and placed it in the sun or add a heat source, you will see the fascinating water cycle. The water cycle repeats three main steps, evaporation, condensation and precipitation. These three steps give us the water we drink every day, the water that you drink could have been in this cycle for years and years. It all begins with the first step, evaporation.

Evaporation: Evaporation is when it is a nice hot day and these little micro droplets change their form from water into water vapour. The water droplets are so small it is physically impossible to see their appearance. Water vapour is water forming a type of gas. This gas is also known as water vapour. It is invisible, unlike other forms which are just clear. Water vapor is very light, so light that it can float in the air. The higher it goes the colder it gets and when the water vapor goes that high, it forms into a little cloud. Therefore leading us to condensation.

Condensation: Condensation is the process of the gas forming into a liquid. When that has happened the water that used to be gas are forming together to get bigger and bigger. Its inflated all the way so the next part has something to do,and the cloud still has the water stored in it so when the cloud gets big enough, that brings us to the next part, precipitation.

Precipitation: Precipitation is when it is a rainy day and you are forced to stay inside so you do not dirty your clothes mum told you to keep clean. When the water drops fall down out of the clouds, it can fall down as rain, sleet, snow or hail. This happens because the capacity of the cloud is limited and is like a balloon popping! And all the water is stored in it so the water all pops out.

Every bit of the cycle makes a big difference. Each part of the water cycle depends on each other. Without evaporation there would be no clouds in the first place? Therefore the water cycle could not continue on to the next stage. Water is something we all need to have in order to live. There are a lot more interesting things around us that we do not notice everyday and are very helpful but underappreciated, but that is a topic for someone else to discover. I bet now you’ll be thinking about this cycle next time you take a drink.

Book Week

GSS Book Week 2019

Authors, Illustrators, Books, Book Week, Parade, Event, 2019

Room 6 was hungry for books during our book week. We had a whole week celebrating all things books. We had author visits from Stu Duval and James Russell. Stu presented workshops on storytelling, cartooning and writing. James shared his books and told us stories. We did lots of cool book week activities in class like making dust jacket covers, wanted posters, bookmarks and story cubes. Finally our favourite day arrived, Friday. We got to dress up as our favourite characters and partake in the literacy treasure hunt. Overall book week is a fantastic week every year. Room 6 LOVES BOOK WEEK!

Here are some photos from our time:

My book week character was: Mrs Trunchbull from Matilda

Water Experiment

Water, water everywhere! On Friday of week 6, we were lucky to have Sally from Watercare come to teach us more about the water. We did a drama activity and experiments. Firstly we examined the process that water goes through to become drinkable water in our households. Our drama was based on the process that the water goes through to be cleaned. We were the water going through each stage. We had so much fun as we ventured around the school. Once we learnt how water is cleaned we then had to try and clean the dirty water ourselves. We had to create a filter system in partners. We had to do four different tests for our experiments. We experimented with a range of filters to try and test which filter system was the best.

Samoan Language Week

This week was Samoan Language Week. In Room 6 we learnt a lot about Samoa and the Samoan culture. We watched Cultural Hub clips about the Samoan alphabet, animals and body parts. Did you know that the Samoan alphabet has only 17 letters. Also during reading time we did a scavenger hunt on facts about Samoa, we then searched the classroom for clues to complete our samoan puzzle. We had experts teaching us greetings and phrases, our experts were Matila, Remy and Rosa.

Maths Cube

Today we have done measurement in maths.
We did measurement in square meters. Mrs.Suggate drew a square and told some kids to get in, that was not us but we went in later. When the kids went in ,only four could fit in the square. My guess was four so I got it right!

Science

Today for Science we did an experiment on air and water pressure, then Mrs.Suggate brought out a balloon and asked Luka to blow it up to a descent size. Luka blew up the balloon and was instructed to push it down to the bottom of a water bucket that Mrs.Suggate had prepared. Then we watched as the mesmerising balloon refused to fall to the bottom, and quickly we heard a silent *POP* under water and it created a little splash out of the bucket.

Then 3 people had specific size to blow 1 balloon each, one was small, one was big and one was in the middle. Then the balloons where passed around to fell the pressure and we learnt more about air pressure and water pressure.

Growth Mindset-Goal Bunting

Each student in room 6 has made a bunting triangle to show our Growth Mindset goal and motto that we want to work on, come and check them out!

Jesus Strand - Religious Education

During term 1 we have been learning about Jesus the Son of God. This is my cube on how Jesus showed us that God loved all his children, we are all blessed with the gifts of faith, hope and love.

My Accident Story

                                       How I Broke my toe

“Are we there yet?!’’ I said for 100th time. “Yes” Mum replied as I surprised by not getting a no. “BYE MUM BYE DAD!!!” I said happily because I really did not want to be with my sisters. Skip to night time, my friends were telling very...uh...inappropriate ghost stories. We ended up waking everyone up with our laughs. “WOW” my friend Nina said after a very sarcastic joke.

The next morning i was chasing Stephony (another friend) upstairs to were the most messiest room was… THE GIRLS ROOM. I was racing to get to Stephony after she reached a dead end. “TAG!!” I shouted as i rapidly zoomed to the stairs! Then I tripped on a shoe, just saying tripping on a shoe is very painful if you are me! I cried in pain then i was helped out to down stairs by the leaders.

Then the mean girls came, don don don! Of course i'm not going name them! I'll call them a and b. A came up to me with b while my foot was resting on a chair. “ you dont need this chair” A said with B aka sidekick, so anyways, they stole the chair.

Later I went home and my mum took me to starship so she could prove me wrong. When this kid next to me threw up, oh and i got a moon boot.

The moral of my story is to never scatter your shoes around a room.

Swimming Sports

                                                                 Swimming sports

Room 6 had a wonderful day at swimming sports. When we all went to the turf we split up into our houses. Thank you Sharyn and parents for helping us with the non competitive swimming and competitive. Also thank you parents for coming along and supporting your children. Good shepherd students thank the teachers very warmly, as every year as they set up and prepare this event for us. I’m sure that every student enjoyed the event. I saw everyone compete with my own eyes and they all did well. The people who lost don’t have to be sad because they should be grateful they got a swim in the warm weather also because there’s always time and effort to improve.

Shine Week

                                                                   Shine Week
A sea of orange flood Good Shepherd School on Friday the 8th of March. This week was shine week. We raise money to help people whose lives are affected domestic violence. In support we all wore orange clothes and brought a gold coin donation to help the charity. Here are some pictures:

Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday

Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday

Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday. The festivities started with the burning of the ashes on the turf. This was a new and exciting experience that not many of us had seen before.
As we saw the flames flare out of the dish we all were on the edge of our seats. We sung some songs and said some prayers before returning to our classes.
Later on during Religious Education we learnt about how before Lent, people used to get rid of all their luxury items such as flour, sugar, butter, eggs and milk by making pancakes. Some classes were even able to enjoy some pancakes of their own.
We all thought that this was a great start to the season of Lent. We got lots of time to think about what deed or challenge we would take on throughout Lent. So after a great day we were all prepared for the season to come!
Jemima Lipscombe

Today was Ash Wednesday. We went to church and sang some hymns, got the ashes on our foreheads, sung happy birthday to a little girl starting school on her birthday! We then went up and got a blessing.
We did make an attempt to keep our ashes on our foreheads, but that was a fail due to swimming and itching it off. We had a good day and hope everyone else did to.
Seihara  Andrews

On Wednesday the school attended Ash Wednesday mass. When room 6 entered the church it was almost dead silent (which is unusual for the school because we are usually so loud).  Everything in mass was covered in purple to represent that Lent has started. The first hymn the school sang together was Ashes. Father asked the volunteers to spread ashes in the shape of the cross on everybody's foreheads. It was a wonderful mass thank you Father for leading it.

Piece of the Puzzle

In Room 6 we are all a piece of the puzzle. There are 29 students and we each complete our puzzle. Without one of us we would not be Room 6. During the second week of school (once the year 6 were back from camp) we spent time learning about each other and completing our piece of the puzzle. We learnt that we are all different and unique made in the image of God. But we also learnt that sometimes people need a little helping hand to make learning fair. Check out our pieces of the puzzle in Room 6 Foyer to learn more about each of us.

Charism of GSS

Did you know the reason Good Shepherd School named their syndicates Connolly and Sheridan? Connolly and Sheridan were the names of the first two sisters that worked at Good Shepherd School when it opened. That is just one of the fun facts we learnt this week when we explored the charism of our school. The charism of our school is the flavour of our school, it is what makes us Good Shepherd School. Over the week we looked at the history of the school and unpacked the visual Image of the Good Shepherd Cross with the values, scripture, feast days and the St Mary MacKillop sayings. We unpacked the values and why we have those values. In groups we identified what each value looked, sounded and felt like before making up definitions. Another new fact I learnt was How our school was made and who made it.

Leadership 2019

This year I am proud to take on the role of Journalist. I look forward to this role because i have a privilege to work with Jemima and Henry while we take pictures of other kids success and write about it in the school newspapers. ]

Year 6 Camp

While the rest of the school was sleeping, enjoying their last day of the school holidays the year six were awake grabbing the last of their essential camp items. Stuffing the cars full of luggage we hit the road making our way up to MERC, Long Bay Beach for the annual Year 6 Leadership Camp. It was a fun, busy and hot week with lots of activities and things to do. There was so much to do with out amazing instructors and helpers, activities like paddle boarding, archery, abseiling, kayaking, rock climbing, giants ladder, stack’em and the list goes on. After the camp day we had plenty to do at night with the camp mass, school council voting, the talent quest and even a spooky game of spot light.

My favourite part was, abseiling because coming down i felt i was going to die! But really i ended up doing it again.Of coarse doing it a second time was optional.
